Assembly/Senate Coalition Introduces Legislation Forming a Commission to Commemorate the War of 1812 PDF Print E-mail
Assemblyman Richard Brodsky (D-Westchester) and Assembly Colleagues have introduced legislation that creates a commission to commemorate the anniversary of the War of 1812 (A.8405). New York State played a key role in War of 1812. Celebrating this milestone gives New Yorkers the opportunity to appreciate and reflect on our rich history. Many of the War’s most crucial battles were fought in the state such as the battle of Plattsburg Bay where ten thousand Americans stood against the British in defense of New York City.
The New York State War of 1812 200th Anniversary Commemoration Commission will plan and execute an organized series of War of 1812 reenactment tourism events. The tourism events will highlight the following key sites: Old Fort Niagara, the Battle of Ogdensburg, the Battle of Plattsburgh, Fort Wadsworth, Sackets Harbor, and some other events as are appropriate.

“The War of 1812 played a major role in our Country’s history as well as New York State’s history. It is critical that New York State continues to celebrate and remember its history, and the heroic citizens and historic landmarks that have helped shape this great nation,” said Assemblymember Brodsky.

State Senator Darrel J. Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent) is introducing the bill in the Senate as a companion to Assemblyman Brodsky’s bill. The 48th Senate District of Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties contains more sites on the front lines of the war than any other, including Oswego, Sandy Creek, Sackets Harbor, Morristown and Ogdensburg.

“In the two hundred years since the War of 1812, the United States and Canada have shared unparalleled peace and prosperity,” Senator Aubertine said. “By commemorating the anniversary of this war we are celebrating the lasting peace that has followed. This commission will work with its Canadian counterpart to promote heritage tourism here in Northern New York. In doing so, it will serve as an extension of our continued efforts to build cross border commerce and economic development between our state and Ontario.”

"The War of 1812 has so much significance in New York State, and particularly along our northern border, where significant battles were fought in Ogdensburg and Sackets Harbor, to name a few,” said Assemblymember Addie Russell (D-Watertown). “Commemorative events throughout the State will certainly draw national and international attention. I am pleased to co-sponsor this important legislation."

“The war of 1812 was extremely significant in confirming the independence of this nation. This is an excellent way to recall its importance in the history of New York State,” said Assemblymember Michael Cusick (D-Staten Island).

“The War of 1812 was an extremely important historical event for New York State and the Nation as a whole,” said Assemblyman Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo). “Remembrance and commemoration are great ideas and I’m glad to be a sponsor of this legislation.”

“New York State was a major player in the War of 1812, notably during the naval Battle of Plattsburgh, the site of which has been declared a National Historic Landmark. New York is also home to the War of 1812 Cemetery in Erie County and reconstructed sites such as Old Fort Niagara,” said Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove). “Americans and New Yorkers, it is vital that we do not forget the history of our great state and the heroes who helped form what our state has become. The commemoration of the War of 1812 will help to keep that history alive.”

“The War of 1812 is a powerful example of the rich history of Niagara County,” said Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte (D-Lewiston). “The creation of this Commission will allow New Yorkers, as well as tourists to reflect on the impact the war had on the Niagara region. Old Fort Niagara is a spectacular historic venue to host a bicentennial celebration. In addition, the events will help spur much-needed economic activity this tourist season.”
